Helpful Tips for Writing Essays on Management
Writing an essay on management can be pretty hard. Especially when there are so many things to write about, finding the appropriate information and organizing it in a visible way seem like hard tasks. That is why I have decided to give you some helpful hints that might ease your writing process.
- Try not to fall into cliches when talking about leadership. Something like “Leadership means setting examples” will not impress anyone. Think of something new! Of course, you should always provide the necessary background knowledge for this sentence (for example, leadership is understood as ‘the act of influencing others’ by people in management), but keep away from already existent expressions if you don’t want your work to be seen as common and unoriginal.
- When you talk about management theories and practices, make sure to cite them correctly. You don’t want people with knowledge in the field to doubt your credibility. After all, if your essay is full of mistakes, why should they trust anything else?
- Try to use as little jargon as possible. If you do that, more people will understand what you are writing about (which means that, most likely, you will be rewarded with a higher grade). And even if some words might be new to someone who does not possess profound knowledge in this area, they shouldn’t feel intimidated by the whole text and give up reading it because of that. Moreover, think carefully about which words and terms would best suit your text: not every word has the same meaning in every field. Thus, before using a word in your essay, be sure that it has the meaning you want to convey.
- When talking about management practices and theories, try to use examples from real life. Even if you don’t have any personal experience with what you are writing about, searching the internet will surely provide you with some useful information. It would even be better if you could find some examples from your own country (after all, most of us live here too), but there is no need to limit yourself: even if it is a practice or theory from another part of the world, why not include it? However, when providing an example that is not yours, make sure to give. And then cite them!
- This is something that might come in handy not only for writing essays on management but for other types of texts as well: try to avoid using vague words. I don’t mean that you should always use scientific terms (even if that’s what most people would expect from an essay about management), but make sure to choose the right words when talking about specific things. For example, instead of saying “the influence of managers on employees’ behavior”, say “management.”
- In order to get a good grade, you should also try to avoid general statements or conclusions. If you think it is more important for particular parts of your essay, be sure to include them at the beginning and/or end of the text.
In addition, always provide the necessary and sufficient amount of details. Sometimes, even if you think that something should be pretty obvious to the reader, it is better to include a little explanation (just enough to make your point clear), rather than forcing them to guess what you were trying to say.
Finally, don’t forget that your goal is to turn the readers into managers once they finish reading your essay. That’s why you should not only provide them with all the necessary knowledge but also with advice on how to apply it in practice. Only then will you be able to write a good text!
In conclusion, try following these simple pieces of advice next time you sit down in front of your computer with a blank document open in front of you! Writing an essay on management does not need to be a hard task after all… Just: it takes practice!
